There has been a change in computing the Self Employment tax this year. The IRS has added two extra forms to compute the tax that was not used in previous years. Even though we use a CPA, I usually go over the forms myself, just to get an idea of what the numbers are. You can still take the exemption for the notary fee on the Self Employment form, but the IRS has added two extra forms at the end of the SE form to compute the tax. When I finished the Self Employment form, instead of recording the final number for the tax on the 1040, you are referred to 1040, Schedule 2, and then 1040 Schedule 1. It became a bit more complicated and I decided to let the CPA figure it out.
