Become a Utah notary public with Notary Rotary, Inc.
Qualifications:
To be appointed as a notary public for the State of Utah a person must meet the following criteria:
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must be resident of the State of Utah for 30 days preceding the appointment and maintain residency during the commission term.
- Must be able to read, speak, and write, the English language.
Term of Appointment:
The term of office for a notary public is four years, unless suspended or revoked by the Office of the Lieutenant Governor or terminated by voluntary resignation.
Step 1: Complete the mandatory notary training and online exam.
Contact PSI, the official testing group for the State of Utah, at (800) 620-5802 to begin the commission process and receive instructions. You will be asked for an email address to deliver online testing information. To obtain a Study Guide use the following link. http://www.psionline.com/programs/UTNY/UTAH_Notary_Study_Guide.pdf.
This will launch the Study Guide into a PDF document and you may print it. Candidates are encouraged to carefully prepare BEFORE ordering the test. To take the exam you will need to register with PSI exams through their site, http://www.psiexams.com/. Follow the onscreen instructions selecting Utah from the State menu and Notary Public from the Licensing Agency menu. The examination is administered on the Internet. If you do not have access to the Internet, try your local library or business center. The examination fee is $30. You will have 50 minutes to take this examination. The examination will terminate promptly after 50 minutes. The examination is closed book. After you have finished your online exam, a score report will be mailed to you the following business day. You should receive your score report within 7 days.
Step 2: Order a $5,000 surety bond from Notary Rotary, Inc.
Once you receive notice that you have passed the state exam you will need to acquire a $5,000 surety bond to send with your application. You may order your surety bond from Notary Rotary, Inc. by clicking on the following link: Utah Notary Supplies
Choose Utah from the menu and enter the store to locate and order your surety bond. Follow the onscreen instructions and your surety bond will ship as soon as we are able to process it, usually the same day it is ordered. When you receive your surety bond make a copy for your records, as the original will be sent with the application.
Step 3: Download and complete the Utah notary public application.

Download and complete the application according to the instructions provided. Mail the completed bond, application, score report, a photo copy of your birth certificate or a photo copy of a current, valid U.S. Passport, or a photo copy of your green card (The expiration date on the green card must exceed the 4 year expiration date of the notary commission in order to qualify), or a photo copy of your certificate of naturalization and a $30.00 non-refundable processing fee payable to the State of Utah to:

The Notary Office will return to you a "Certificate of Authority of Notary Public."
Step 4: Order your official seal and any other supplies you may need from Notary Rotary, Inc.
Each notary public for the State of Utah is required to own and use an official seal of office to authenticate all official acts performed as a notary public. The state does not require the use of a Utah notary journal or notarial record book, but we always advise notaries to acquire one. A journal or record book is a good way to provide proof if one of your official acts is ever called into question.
