Agent put me on hold to ask the supervisor my question and this is supervisor's response (as told by the agent): "Nothing in the CA notary law prohibits a notary from signing as a witness and notarizing the principal's signature on the same document, BUT, the SOS strongly advises against it. "
So I ask: "If I were to sign as a witness and notarize on the same doc, could I get in trouble?"
Agent: As I said, the rules don't say you can't do it, but we advise against it. So as far as getting in trouble for it, I don't know, can't say you will or won't. The chips will fall where they may.

| | | | | OT: Smartphones Posted by LKT/CA at 10/26/2011 9:14:00 PM | I'm not usually one to jump on the bandwagon when a new smartphone becomes all the rage (i.e. the iphone 4), especially since it hasn't been a year since I upgraded to my Blackberry Style, which is probably ready for the Smithsonian at this point. However, I am getting curious about the iphone 4 and wonder what so great about ANY of the iphones. A coworker has the new iphone 4 and was demonstrating it's voice activated feature - asking it all kinds of questions and the phone answering back. The coworker asked the phone this question: Where can I dump a dead body? The phone answered with a list!! YIKES!! The list being: garbage dump, a field, freeway underpass, metal foundry, and a few other places I cannot think of offhand.
Reminds me of the Twilight Zone episode where the computer (room size) fell in love with the programmer! Are we at the beginnings of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines where computers think for themselves and eventually take over and wipe out mankind? |
| | | | | Unwanted phone calls Posted by LKT/CA at 9/2/2011 10:51:00 AM | I responded on another form to a Notary who was being stalked by the jealous significant other of a client she had confirmed an appointment with. The stalker was constantly calling the Notary so here's my suggestion for ignoring the following: Telemarketers, deadbeat or lowball companies, freeloading or PITA relatives, stalkers, or anyone else you don't want to be bothered with. Just save their phone number to your contact list and assign it a "silent ring" or a "no ring", whichever your phone has. Also, turn off the vibrating feature for this number. Title the number "NUISANCE 1", the next unwanted number is NUISANCE 2, etc. When they call, you won't even know they're calling - the call will eventually go to voicemail. You'll see you have a voice message from NUISANCE - just delete it. Save the nuisance numbers for at least six months, then delete.
The same person may try calling from a different phone number.....just save that as NUISANCE ____. Eventually they'll go away. I was up to NUISANCE 6 at one point. They're all gone now - HA!!
