A First for Me Today.
Posted by Dennis D Broadbooks at 12/4/2007 5:19:00 PM
I had an appointment early this afternoon with a couple in their home & one of the 1st things they asked me as I came in is if I had a cold. It just so happens that I've been fighting one for a little over a week now & let them know I was still sniffling a little bit. They asked if I didn't mind they'd like me to wear a surgical mask as their 8 year old son was suffering from cancer & he was in the living room next to the kitchen table where we were signing. I said I didn't mind at all. The signing was conducted with me wearing the mask the entire time I was there.

As we concluded the mother went into the living room to tend to their son & I asked the father what form of cancer the son had. He said brain cancer. I asked him how many surgeries the son had undergone & he replied: "5, 6, or 7...I don't remember exactly. He's in the terminal stages right now." What this meant was that the child sitting not 30 feet from me was within weeks or days of dying. The father & I talked about how they were coping with this heartbreak for the next 30 minutes. He mentioned numerous times how their faith in God & prayers of others were keeping them from falling into despair.

The son's name is Aven & I'd ask anyone who feels so led to be in prayer for this family. Perhaps this should be posted on the "Leisure" forum...but I felt led to post it here since it was part of my "work" today.

...located on Vinial Street in Pittsburgh, PA? I didn't see any previous mentions on the board of this company & added it in NotRot's Signing Central under the name of SN Two as Harry's software won't accept a company name with less than 4 characters in it. Anyone have any experience with this company? The contact name I have is John Roller. TIA!

Not to Beat a Dead Horse...

...but I heard a story on the radio (I did a search on the Internet to see if I could verify its veracity, coming up with zip, zero, nada...it could be an urban legend) today discussing a wedded couple from Bosnia who are in the midst of a divorce. The proximate cause for their splitting up? It turns out both of them had joined the same Internet chat room "looking for love in all the wrong places" & utilizing nom de plumes they evidently became quite enamored with one another. After some time the couple finally discovered the true identity of the "love of their life" & decided it was best to part ways. This reminds me so much of "The Pina Colada Song" as performed by Rupert Holmes, except that song has a happier ending to it. I also couldn't help but think of the discussion we've had on the NotRot board recently about anonymous posters.

OT - "The 'In' Crowd"
Posted by Dennis D Broadbooks at 8/13/2007 10:59:00 AM
While listening to a song (Petula Clark's "Downtown"Wink from the 60's this morning during my spinning class it prompted me to do a search on the Internet today for my all-time #1 favorite song. It's "The 'In' Crowd" as performed & recorded by Dobie Gray. I saw the national debut of this song on the TV show "Hullabaloo" (hosted by Frankie Avalon & Annette Funicello) & knew it was circa 1965. What I didn't know is that I could find the original footage of the show & view it online. For those who'd like to take a trip down memory lane, here's a link to the video:

http://www.dailymotion.com/tag/DOBIE/video/xk31g_dobie-gray-the-in-crowd_music

I also found another web site displaying a listing of the performers on the 02/16/1965 Hullabaloo show featuring Dobie Gray's debut of "The 'In' Crowd". Here are the other artists who appeared on that golden night.

1) Frankie Avalon & Annette Funicello (host) – "All I Need is the Girl"
2) The Kinks – "You Really Got Me"
3) Dobie Gray – "The ‘In' Crowd"
4) The Brothers Four – "Sakura" (Japanese Folk Song) and "Rock Island Line"
5) Annette Funicello – "Chim Chim Cheree"
6) Sue Thompson - "Paper Tiger"
7) Freddie & the Dreamers - "I Love You Baby"
8) Freddie & the Dreamers – "I'm Telling You Now" (Freddie shows Frankie and Annette how to dance "The Freddie" during song.)
9) HULLABALOO LONDON segment with Brian Epstein
9a) Band of Angels - "Not True as Yet"
9b) Brian Epstein interviews Andrew Loog Oldham
10) Frankie Avalon & Annette Funicello (medley) – "Beach Party," "By the Sea," "On the Boardwalk in Atlantic City," "Love Letters in the Sand" and "My Coney Island Baby."
11) Comedy skit: Frankie interviews "Mr. Surfboard" (Don Adams).
12) The Kinks – "All Day and All of the Night"
13) The Brothers Four – "Somewhere"
14) Frankie Avalon – "The Best is Yet to Come"
15) Frankie and Annette announce next week's guests. Closing credits with instrumental version of "I'm Telling You Now"

OT - OK, Gary CA...

...it's time for you to come out of hiding again. Our newest (well, not exactly new) sensation, Rick Ankiel, just hit a 2 run homer off Derek Lowe to put our Cards up 2-0 over the Codgers. Not that I'm counting or anything, but that's Rick's 2nd homer in 3 games since being called up from the minors on Thursday. What a "feel good" story he's turned out to be! Yeah, I know...your LA Codgers managed to eek out a 2-1 win last night, but let's see what happens the next two games.

This is a First for Me...

...after accepting an assignment from a company for a very acceptable fee, I noted the following little addendum in my confirmation.

"Also, you will earn a $25 bonus if you call me when docs are printed, all items are signed and notarized properly, and you reply with a confirmation status and tracking number."

Don't you wish ALL companies operated in this manner?

Kudos to Harry!
Posted by Dennis D Broadbooks at 7/24/2007 11:06:00 AM
I know Harry is a modest sort & doesn't like it when we brag on him...but I'd like to publicly thank Harry for something he just did for me. I ordered an embossing seal in January of this year & it was delivered in the prompt manner we've all become accustomed to with NotRot. Within the past couple of weeks I noticed the seal wouldn't leave an impression in even a single sheet of paper. After tinkering with it for several days & still not able to make it work I sent Harry an e-mail with my dilemma. Without going into great detail about what we (Harry & I) agree seems to be the problem, I'm being shipped a replacement embossing seal at no charge. In my opinion this is just one more reason to make NotRot your one stop shop for all your Notary needs!

Tech Issue with HP LJ 3320 Scanner Function
Posted by Dennis D Broadbooks at 7/13/2007 8:43:00 AM
I'm having a problem with my HP LaserJet 3320 scanner inserting a vertical line down the left side of any page scanned with the autofeed. The line doesn't show when I lay it on the flatbed, only on the autofeed & it doesn't do it on every page. Usually the first couple of pages are clean & then it seems to kick in after that. Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this? The scanner itself is about 5 years old...maybe it's just on its last legs. TIA.

Harry NR - Private Message Dilemma
Posted by Dennis D Broadbooks at 7/4/2007 7:14:00 AM
I just attempted to respond to a private message sent to me on NotRot & the Message Center program won't automatically plug in the individual's name I'm attempting to reply to. Pressing the reply icon takes one to a blank new message screen asking me to choose a recipient. I can do a search but since I don't know the individual's name (other than Mary NSA) I'm dead in the water. Anyone else have this same problem?

WSB Reverse Mortgage, Inc
Posted by Dennis D Broadbooks at 7/2/2007 1:03:00 PM
I've a friend who has been approached by this company to sell reverse mortgages to our older generation. They've represented to him that he doesn't need to be licensed in order to sell this product in Missouri & he can make $2,500+ per sale. What are the downsides to this type of selling & would anyone know if it's true you don't need any kind of license to peddle reverse mortgages? Here's a link to the company web site:

http://www.reversemortgage4u.com/.

Like a lot of other ventures being offered today, I have initial doubts as to the veracity of this company's claims. TIA for any & all feedback!

Feedback Requested...

...on a Notary certificate situation. Yesterday I had the unusual occasion for me of reviewing a Notary cert I completed on 06/13/2007. It was the last page of a DOT & what jumped out at me was the fact someone over the past 2 weeks had taken the liberty of adding to the verbiage I'd inserted. What this individual had done was print the words "husband & wife" after the two borrowers' names I'd written in the space provided. I know in certain states (CA being one) Notary law prohibits the capacity of the individuals signing the docs to be listed in the Notary cert. I've had numerous conversations with our MO SOS Notary Commissions division over this issue & while MO statutes are silent when it comes to this, I've been advised I'm on firm ground by refusing to include in the Notary certificate the capacity of the individual(s) siging the document. If it's pre-printed in the Notary cert, I strike it out & needless to say I never write it in when there's a blank space for the signers' names.

I've sent over a copy of this form to our MO SOS for their review & the individual there I need to speak with won't be back in the office until later today. My general question to the SOS is whether the altering of my Notary cert rises to level of action being taken either on my part or by the SOS. I've since discovered exactly who the individual was who took it upon themselves to write in the addition & their rationale was that the loan wouldn't fund without the words "husband & wife" in the Notary cert as the borrowers were listed on the 1st page of the DOT that way. That's hogwash (to put it mildly) as I've completed hundreds of DOT's where the capacity is listed on the 1st page of the DOT & I've either not entered the words "husband & wife" or struck out the pre-printed words in the Notary cert. Unless all of the DOT's I've done previously are being altered, it's a virtual certainty they've been accepted for funding & recording purposes without the capacity of the signers listed in the Notary cert.

While waiting on the "official" response from our SOS I'd be interested in hearing the thoughts/opinions of others on their perception of the seriousness of this. Perhaps to some this falls under the category of "so what", but unless I receive a response to the contrary from our SOS I'm very uncomfortable with someone tinkering with MY Notary certs.
