| | | | | Coffee on the Laptop - Recovery Plan Posted by BrendaTx at 12/5/2011 6:01:00 AM | Saturday, I knocked darn near a full cup of coffee onto my laptop.
I immediately unplugged it, pulled the battery out, turned it on its side and drained the coffee out of the computer on the side the most of it went into (in that order). Of course, I made sure that the liquid was never likely to run toward the screen.
Next, I unscrewed the panel off of the back of it.
I set the laptop on its side to drain out of the side that the most of it went into and put two respectable fans on it, one on the back, one on the keyboard.
Then, I shut the door, pulled out my newer back up computer and restored my files to it from Carbonite.
The coffee computer is back in business this morning. I missed around an hour of up time.
Tips:
Immediately remove power from the computer after a spill. Don't take time to shut down or close programs; just get the power off of it. You may lose a couple of files like that, but not the entire system.
Do not turn the computer back on until it has had plenty of time to dry, 24-48 hours.
Power + Liquid = Shorting out.
If you are not willing to lose the system, or you are not familiar with computers at all, get the computer into a drying position and call a repair person.
This is just the way that I handle spills on laptops (not my first rodeo). You should proceed with caution because your mileage may vary. |
| | | | | Regarding CJ's Thoughts on Invalid ID Msg #405615 Posted by BrendaTx at 12/3/2011 6:48:00 PM | Msg #405615
CJ writes:
Today, I signed a guy who works for the District Attorney. >>>Part of his job is to arrest notaries. <<<We got talking about invalid IDs, and he explained that if the notary DOES sign someone using improper ID,>>> not only is the notary arrested, but the signers are arrested too because they agreed to use the improper ID. This is “conspiracy to commit a crime”, which is ALWAYS a felony<<<<. So next time they are leaning on you to break the law for their convenience, let them know that if they do that, they are risking jail as well.

I would like the opportunity to contact this man. I know you cannot give me his name because he is a client, but wow...inquiring minds want to know!!
I am almost certain that policemen or sheriff personnel do not work for District Attorneys' offices. They work for either a city or a county, respectively. Is this different in California?
In what area(s) of California have outlaw notary cases been assigned to units?
This is all very interesting. I would like to see just one case that this guy has handled in the fashion he described to you. I'm skeptical of his story.
|
| | | | | If you're taking on new clients, I'd like to include you... Posted by BrendaTx at 11/20/2011 8:06:00 PM | If I get one of these invitations I'm going to be a very angry person.
People: If you do not know how to keep from spamming folks with sites that you sign up for then you need to turn off your computer and go take a few classes.
I'm so tired of it.
Where is this crap coming from?

| | | | | Google Chrome Posted by BrendaTx at 11/6/2011 9:40:00 AM | Forgive me if this is OT, but my browser is the window to my "work stuff."
I have been using Google Chrome for years. It has been reliable.
On Friday, I hit a snag. Pages would stop loading and I'd see "waiting for cache" in the lower right hand page. I could get out of the program and re-start it and it would work well for about ten sights and then nosedive.
I have cleared my cache, uninstalled and reinstalled and all is going well for now, so I wanted to post. Just for good measure, I threw in a re-boot, too.
I don't like Firefox or IE, except when required for a site that requires one of them. I absolutely love Google Chrome. It's lighter and faster....until now. Hopefully, I have fixed it. Thought I had better post this question before I bogged down again.
I've read the help and it sounds like a lot of folks gripe or fix the way that I have.
Have any of you run into this?

Posted by BrendaTx at 11/5/2011 11:03:00 AM | Notary Mark Hittell and his wife, Doris, were charged with grand theft for their involvement. The couple pleaded no contest to related charges in the case and were sentenced to probation.
http://www.news-journalonline.com/news/local/west-volusia/2011/10/27/osteen-woman-not-guilty-in-deed-theft-case.html
If this is what notaries who plead guilty to grand theft get in the State of California....oh my goodness. |
| | | | | *Reasonable* Answer from the CA SoS Posted by BrendaTx at 10/27/2011 10:25:00 PM | After today's lively debate on IDs, I received a PM from a California notary. The notary shared this from the CA SOS.
It proves that the More/Less rule is a myth.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you for contacting our office with regard to identification.
Civil Code section 1185 (3) which states "Reasonable reliance of the presentation to the officer of any one of the following, if the document is current or has been issued within five years: (A) An identification card or driver's license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. (B) A passport issued by the Department of State of the United States......"
For example, it is normally reasonable to believe that if "Sam" is on the document, and is short for Samuel, which is on the identification, however if the id shows just Sam, the document could show S., Samuel, Samantha, etc.
Again, you need to have reasonable reliance that the person appearing before you is the same person who signed the document. Other elements on the identification such as photo, description, signature can also be used to determine reasonable reliance.
Sincerely, Notary Public Section"

| | | | | ~~~~~~~~~Getting Close to Hand Off~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Posted by BrendaTx at 8/12/2011 7:37:00 PM | I got to the bank today had a check made out.
It went out via FedEx to one Mrs. Sylvia M. in her corner of Florida.
I received one last check for $25. Sylvia has another from a NotRotter on on the way to her.
We will have to wait until the Royal NotRot Mum tells us the final total on what YOU guys have done!
|
| | | | | UPDATE - Still over 4K :) Posted by BrendaTx at 8/8/2011 8:41:00 PM | Sylvia has received a cashier's check in the amount of $1885. That represents our checks.
I am 99.999999% certain that all checks have cleared and I have now transferred all of the paypal funds over to my bank account to disburse.
It will take until about Friday (or Monday) to get to my bank account from PayPal. (It used to be 3 days!)
I will skip, drive and hop up to my bank again on Saturday, get a cashier's check, and I will skip, hop, and drive over to the USPO and drop the second cashier's check into the mail to Sylvia. Then, I'm going to have a drink and exhale. Sylvia is 101% in charge after that.
I sent Sylvia a complete PayPal produced accounting of my PayPal account tonight.
Perhaps Sylvia will take a picture of the final check for us. |
| | | | | Over $4000!!! Posted by BrendaTx at 8/6/2011 11:30:00 AM | I am headed to the bank right now to get a cashier's check for the checks. Paypal will be moved next.

PayPal payments: Four of you who sent paypal payments are still owed a note acknowledging your gift.
Check payments: I want to tell those of you whose checks I just received today--your check is here! Hopefully this will help you to identify that yours is in the list:
ZIP CODE AMOUNT 2---4 $50 9---9 $30 9---0 $25 6---5 $50 2---4 $50 9---8 $50 3---3 $100
I would have sent each of you an individual thank you note for your check as I have done prior to now, but I don't have some of your email addresses and I am working around extra people here.
Thank you so much for this generous wave of support.
Re: Sylvia
I emailed Sylvia last evening and told her that I would be off the radar for a day or so. As I understand it, she is now under the weather! Sorry if my silence caused any concerns.
Thanks again, all.

| | | | | Paul Williamson (PAW) was on the check... Posted by BrendaTx at 7/28/2011 8:14:00 PM | When I came in this evening after an outdoors meeting I was completely washed out. I did not stop by the mailbox this evening and planned to go straight to the shower and hit the sack without posting tonight. I'm really tired, but wanted to update you all.
There was a Priority Mail envelope in my door. I opened it and there was not a note but who it was from and what it was for was clear...the memo section said "Paul Williamson (PAW)".
I will check my mailbox in the morning for additional gifts and update again tomorrow.
The notary community can be proud of their efforts and the horses that have brought us here, so to speak. We are at over $3000.
Good night.

| | | | | Collection: In a holding pattern...no mail this evening. Posted by BrendaTx at 7/27/2011 9:09:00 PM | | Will update you tomorrow. Brenda |
| | | | | Payments to the PAW fund still accepted :) Posted by BrendaTx at 7/27/2011 6:40:00 AM | You may send payments until Aug. 3.
Paypal email: Notaries4PaulW@Gmail.com
I am getting inquiries to ask if we are still taking them. We are.
If you cannot send your contribution until after that date, please email that address or PM me and let me know. Sylvia and I will put our heads together on it and figure out how to handle any trailing memorials. |
| | | | | In hand: $2013 Posted by BrendaTx at 7/26/2011 9:47:00 PM | | Tomorrow should bring two more checks...we have been made aware of an amazing (yes, amazing) gift on its way from a source near and dear to us all. When it arrives and we have it in hand I will update you with a total. |
| | | | | we will hit 2000. Posted by BrendaTx at 7/26/2011 2:06:00 PM | | I just received a check for $300 from a business. |
| | | | | Update: $1548. Around 60 contributors now... Posted by BrendaTx at 7/25/2011 7:23:00 PM | Two checks are already in and that amount includes them. Thank you, so much everyone.
This morning I provided Sylvia a PDF generated by paypal that showed the amount collected. I will begin to deposit the checks tomorrow. I expect two more, plus mine.
|
| | | | | Please let me know if I have N O T acknowledged your gift Posted by BrendaTx at 7/24/2011 8:17:00 PM | To my knowledge I have notified and thanked everyone for their gift up until this very moment.
If you have sent one via PayPal and have not received an email from me, please contact me.
I have run into a few names that did not have their current email with PayPal. I would like to confirm receipt with everyone.
You may send a message to notaries4paulw@gmail.com . Thank you...and, I really am going to shut it down now...really, this time.
A gift of $50 just pushed us up to $1350, and we still have checks coming...I would wager a bet that we are going to hand Mrs. W a check for at least $1500. Good work and thanks to each helpful, generous person who gave $1 - $100.
May God Bless and Good Night.

| | | | | Question to you on this collection effort... Posted by BrendaTx at 7/24/2011 1:38:00 PM | We have received money from two excellent signing services and a promise (phone call) by a third. I checked them in SC and verified that they are of the quality that you would expect. Would it be wrong to recognize these services, NR and one other notary related business by posting their names on my personal website?
To me, it seems that the **companies** that truly support notaries by giving of time, money and services should be recognized in this way.
I can't weigh it out on my own. I want notary opinions....so there's something to think about today. |
| | | | | Collection Update: $1161 / 45 Contributors Posted by BrendaTx at 7/24/2011 9:57:00 AM | Since it is a new day, I will go ahead and start another thread to post the amounts in.
This amount does not show amounts that some have pledged to pay by the 3rd. |
| | | | | Collection: Just to let you know...I may leave for awhile. Posted by BrendaTx at 7/23/2011 7:31:00 PM | If you do not receive an acknowledgment from me until tomorrow morning, please be patient. I will get one out to you.

| | | | | Collection for Paul Williamson Posted by BrendaTx at 7/22/2011 10:56:00 AM | My name is Brenda Stone and I have been a poster here for a long time.
Sylvia is undoubtedly swamped right now, so I am going to get the ball moving and suggest that anyone who would like to provide funds via PayPal.com account to send to Paul's wife should send it via PayPal.com to
notaries4paulw@gmail.com
That's Notaries 4 paul w @ gmail.com
I thought that I would collect for a week, and the probably get the check to her on the following week.
When someone is in the hospital there are tons of expenses for the person going and coming.
I feel that this is a kindest way that to show Paul's wife how valuable that he was to US.
I know that he would be so touched it if she got an outpouring of our collective small offerings and a list of all the people who contributed (no amount listed) to see how beloved her husband was.
Your amount will be confidential, but I will list your name unless you say that I should not. I was waiting for Sylvia's input but I will go forward because people are starting to ask and want to collect. I am hopeful that Sylvia will present this money to Ann.
If you need someone to vouch for me, I think a few of the old timers will.
