A Side Note for Realtors/Signing Agents...

I just thought I would throw out this idea to you. At this point, my full time occupation is a Realtor, but my signings certainly add much needed income to my "single mother household budget". Some of the people that I do signings for are going to eventually, hopefully need a Realtor. Do I tell them I am a Realtor in case they need one? Absolutely not! I don't have to say a word. I work for an ERA franchise, so I have ERA license plates on the front of my Blazer and I have magnetic strips (approximately 8" x 24") with my name, company name and phone number on them on both my driver side doors. I have a friendly, outgoing personality and people have walked me to the door, seen my vehicle and said to me - if I ever need a Realtor, I will certainly call you! Did I say anything or solicit their business? Nope - I didn't say anything. Anybody see anything wrong with this? BTW, I had the magnets before I became a Signing Agent, if that matters. In the town where I live, we are not totally saturated with Realtors/Notaries, so people pay attention to this type of thing.

Robin,
I am a Broker and have no problem giving the borrowers a card with their closing paperwork and I always wear a name tag with my name and company. Since I pass out cards why would I not give them a card. If they have a current real estate need then I may be able to turn them into a client. If they do not have a need then my card goes into a drawer in their house and I may get a call at a later date. I have signed the same borrowers over the years for different title companies and different lenders. If you handled the signing professionally then that will give you a leg up should they need a Realtor

Thanks, Paul. I wasn't sure we could "mix" business or appear to be soliciting business while doing signings, but as a Broker, you would know. I appreciate your input. I think I will do the same thing!

Robin,
I have gotten 12 direct clients and 25 referrals from just leaving my business card and being professional. Borrowers tend to chat during the signing and as they know I an a Realtor they may ask questions which I will gladly answer. I do not comment on their current closing situation but will answer real estate related questions that I am legally able to answer. While you are doing the signing you are building a rapport and if the borrowers are comfortable with you they will remember that when they decide to buy or sell or refer you to a friend.

In addition to being a NSA, I am also a Registered Tax Preparer in the state of CA. The name of my company is on my business card, and includes both the words "notary" and "tax". Many times, after the signing, people will comment "So, you do taxes also?". I always answer truthfully and have had several say they would like me to prepare their taxes. I don't see anything unethical or wrong about that.

Robin,
I too am a Realtor with ERA, but in CA. I have the magnetic car signs that say REALTOR, but they also say Notary. I give the borrowers my card with their paperwork, and tell them that if they have any problem at all to give me a call. I have gotten calls for other Notary work from a few of the borrowers.

It works for me, and I never comment on their loans, but will answer general Real Estate questions, like how the prices have risen in the area, etc.

What ERA do you work for?

I work for ERA Eagle Real Estate in Muncie, Indiana - what about you? What do you think about Team ERA? Have you/your company familiarized yourself with all of it? There is so much! I have worked some with the Property Source newsletter, but I have only put a dent in it!
