For the no no companies..is inflating your price a cop out
I received 3 calls from no no companies that are either no pay or slow pay companies. Since I read the previous posts I inflate my price to avoid saying anything negative about their reputation. I feel like this is a cop out and that I should tell them that due to them screwing over previous notaries, I am not about to get suckered in. What do you think?

I agree with you! I didn't receive payment from a company so I reported them to the BBB and I also called the company that contacted them to let them know just what kind of business they are doing, then I sent out an email to all my fellow notaries to let them know to "BE AWARE".

But, maybe if enough people would inflate
Maybe if enough people would inflate their prices these companies might come to realize they do need us more than once.

Nicole,
I think what you need to do is distinguish between "slow pay" and "no pay" companies. As for the no pay companies, yes I believe it is a cop out. You tell me the difference between charging $50 bucks and $150 bucks. In the end ya got zero plus maybe a bit of psychic satisfaction if you have charged a higher fee.
I think you should be forthright with non-paying companies (as to why you don't want to accept the assignment), but I would suggest you tone down the language a little bit.
And as I am sure you are aware if you turn down an assignment from a slow pay company, you get zero, zilch, nada.

That should be psychological satisfaction...

Why would you not tell them why?
What you may want to consider doing is setting a reasonable fee, then tell them that in order for you to handle the closing, because of the reputation they have for non-payment, you will need the check FedExed with the documents.
About the only remedy for them then, if they accept, is to cancel payment on the check. In most jurisdictions, that constitutes theft of services, and it is a criminal act.
One way or the other, though, I would let them know that they aren't getting >>my<< services because of >>their<< reputation.

I do let them know that I am not available. I just think that telling them the same thing that has been said by every other signing agent is redundant. I get the feeling that they are looking for new suckers. I have quick links to what their base fee is and I just double my price so that they will say that they will have to look at other places.
Unlike most of the newbies, I read and re-read the oldest posts for non paying or slow paying companies. Companies who lied about embezzlement, etc and I also checked out people who had good experiences with ss. I do most of my work with title companies and that is who I market to. I like to cut out the middle man and in my everyday work life, most of the escrow officers are straight up about loans that are closing or not closing and the conditions that need to be met. Also, I have received every check that I was supposed to receive.

There is a psychological basis for telling them that you are not available to them because of their reputation. It is called reinforcement. In this case, you are reinforcing in their mind and in your actions, that their lack of honesty and integrity will not be tolerated. As to the other response to your message, while you might be a board watcher, if they had done their job and been honest, there would be nothing to put on the boards to begin with...

Actually, I was contacted a couple of times by Notary America, both times it was a man. Both times I told him no because of their poor pay (no pay) reputation. All I got for, politely I might add, informing him of that, he proceeded to berate me for being a notary board watcher/poster. After that, I am now "booked," not available, etc.
