Signings Directly from Title Companies

I am reading some of these posts and the number of ss(s) that have come and gone since I began doing signings part time is scary! I do this on a real part time (maybe 5-10 a month) as a supplement to my regular income. But, I could only imagine how devestating it would be if I had come to rely on some of the ss(s) that are stiffing us.
I had the infamous experience with Victory, but luckily that has been it. (Probably because of my part time status) But I have worked for just about every other ss that I am hearing horror stories about.

Does anyone have insight on going directly to title companies to secure signings with them. Why do we need the middleman (ss) anyway?!!!!

Maybe we do, I don't really know, anyone have any insight?
