Newbie here...wondering if any of you would mind a tag along

Hey there....I just recently registered with Riverside County as a Notary and would like to know if any of you professionals would mind a newbie tagging along with you??

I'm so anxious to start working. Any advice?

Thanks....much appreciated! Smiley

The latest such conversation was only a few hours ago. It has been noted repeatedly thst California is totally saturated with signing agents; one comment was that withing a 10 mile radius of one city, there were 400 NPs listed. And the question was asked: Even in a non-competitive atmosphere, would you expect Ford to train Toyota personnel to compete against them? It's quite naive.

That is too funny.

I sincerely hope that by now you've realized that it's not greed that keeps us from training our competition to take work away from us, it's just plain business sense.

And I also hope you learn the true definition of "positivity". It's certianly not the bitchiness you've managed to show throughout this thread.

HughNOT Comedy

This is a comedy.

Hugh's posts are controlling several posters' emotions. My grandma always told me "if a person can make you angry, they can control you." (I see the point, now Grandma!)

JMHO, but this is bordering on hilarious to see what an uproar Hugh (of all people, laugh, laugh, snort, snort) is able to evoke by being "rude" and all the other things he's getting called out for doing. NO...not taking up for him...just noticing the responses that just keep on coming. And, do you really think Hugh's joy of life will leave him if he cannot post here? I am sure he likes it here like I do, but I am guessing that's not a threat that will crush him if it's carried out.

If Hugh and CaliNotary were to team up and become cult leaders, from what I have seen here they could apparently run the world. (And, if you wonder if this is directed at you, remember the words of Carly Simon: "You're so vain, I bet you think this song is about you." It's not directed at anyone...it's just an amused moment of observation.)

So does it means that HUGH would like to be treated that way....hmmmm...well we didn't have to listen to Korey's crap and Hugh can go ride the Korey train out of here to. I (and many others as well I believe) do not appreciate or need his way of responding to people. Shut up if you have nothing nice to say. There are other ways of saying what he said...point made by Sylvia. Talking down to someone is NOT necessary in ANY sense.

I beg to differ...

To the contrary, Hugh is a rather blunt fellow and appreciates blunt, but truthful, answers from what I've seen. He is treating others how he would like to be treated. I think if he was to ask a naive question, he would appreciate a short answer giving him the truth and, if necessary, a reality check. The truth is not always 'nice'. He simply told it how it is.

Even Sylvia, who is sweet as pie, had to use an analogy and type a lengthy post to attempt to put it 'nicely'. Could he have put his statement a bit more 'courteously'? Probably. Was he trying to hurt someone's feelings? He doesn't know the person he was speaking to well enough to waste his energy trying to be 'rude' or 'pompous' or 'arrogant'. Just take it with a grain of salt and be thankful for the insight. If a comment like that gets under your skin you are not going to stand a chance against lenders, escrow officers and signing services.

Thank you for your post.

Adding:

If one is too sensitive to criticism they will eventually become manipulated by people up the chain who engage this management style. Before you know it, you'll hear and become influenced by:

-All notaries do that!
-In ten years of doing this, you are the first who has refused.
-You are not very good at this are you? If you were you'd know you have to do . . .(fraudulent act).
-You could get sued if you don't do what I am saying you have to do...
-Everyone does these for $40! Everyone loves them...what's your problem?

And, if you don't toughen up, you'll think every set of notary instructions is telling you that you are an idiot. Some are. Who cares as long as you get your check?

The first time you make an error you'll lose credibility when you start lying to cover it up rather than just say: "Yep. I blew it. I'll fix it."

One who is threatened by others not agreeing with them cannot survive with peace of mind in tact...especially in our business.

Hi Linda
While Hugh may not have put it very well, there is truth in what he posted.
California is saturated with signing agents. There are around 2000 that cover Riverside county alone.

Suppose you had a successful bakery, and the store next to yours became empty, and someone decided they wanted to open a bakery there, but needed training. Would you honestly train that person so he/she could open a bakery next door to you and possibly take your clients?

This is how it is in the Signing agent business. It is difficult to find someone who is willing to train the "competition". The refi boom seems to be at an end, and so there is not the work that there was several years ago.

All, I can advise is to study your California notary handbook, know the notary laws inside out. Market yourself to as many signing companies as you can, but be prepared for long periods without work, as most of the companies have already got their "favourite" signing agents they work with, and also because the areas are so saturated that the companies can pick and choose, a lot of them are asking for a minimum of 2 years experience (and that is a Catch 22 situation, because if you can't get the work, then you can't get the experience).

You also need to invest in the right equipment. An HP laser printer with PCL 5 or PCL6 drivers, a fax machine for outgoing faxes, but get something like maxemail for your incoming faxes.
Some companies are requesting a cable or DSL connection if you are going to accept e-docs. Of course a cell phone is a must.

There are notary luncheons in California, and it would help you to find out more about them and when the next one is (have to watch the message boards for that info) and you will find they are a big help.

Good luck to youSmiley I can't help with "tagging along" as I am in Florida, but I am willing to answer any questions you may have.

Im in Moreno Valley and you just hit the nail in the middle of the head Sylvia, Im not going to train my next door buddy, but if I dont want to train her I just dont answer her request and ignore it.

But some other notaries are afraid of loosing future jobs I think. JMHO.

Serious advice for all newbies

Please put the two-letter abbreviation for your state at the end of the author name you chose. It will help in two ways: People will give you answers that are correct for your state; many people have the same or similar names.

Got questions? Of course! Use the "Search" button before you post. You will be verbally abused if you ask the same questions that were answered in detail already.

Read all the posts on this forum. Yes, all the way back to the beginning. You'll get a better real-world education than any course you could buy.

Some of what you hear here may sound very negative. Most of it is due to people having been fed a line of nonsense by companies that offer training that "prepares" people to make thousands of dollars their first month. No, in most places in California there is NOT enough notary work to go around. There is not enough notary work in a lot of other geographical areas for the existing notary signing agents (NSAs) to make a full-time living. It is NOT personal. If you've believed the hype, taken the course(s), and then come here to do the research, adjust your expectations now. Just don't blame the notaries who post here.

Most important, study your states notary laws. Know them cold.

Hi, Linda, you might be interested in signing up with

the Signing Registry. They have a mentorship and training program that can both educate you and help you feel more comfortable as you begin. They find mentors from out of your area so you aren't competing for the same work. I'm not a new notary but only started doing loans last year. My advice is to advertise yourself for non-loan signing notary services and get lots of experience doing that first. Then, get some loan signing training and a mentor. Then... read read read these and the other notary boards. As you go, pick up the equipment you need - ie, get all your ducks in a row before you say yes to those signing services or you'll lose the business as quickly as you got it. and Last, ignore the grumpy people, you'll find out that there's no point in even engaging in argument with them.

Linda I'm not from California but if I was I would offer you a ride along just because I understand what compition really is. The population of your area is approximately 4 or 5 million people correct if not more?

Well with that many people all have to have something notarized sooner or later so why not help a newbie get started and it just might help you get more work also because after the newbie gets started you could possibly trade overflow.

That's just my opinion and I am still considered a newbie I'm only in my 3rd full month.

Re: "Puppet show" and "sock puppet"

"Puppet Show" is Erna's own term about this thread. I guess she thinks the thread is only valid while whe has something she wants to contribute, then it becomes game playing of sorts. I'll refrain from pointing out the obvious of how her posts contributed to the thread growing into the "puppet show".

"Sockpuppet" is a phrase that's used when somebody creates multiple new identities to support themselves on a forum like this. Korey was the main identity, Susan, LaToya, etc. were the sockpuppets he created to make it appear like other people agreed with him and were cheering him on.

It's beyond pathetic and painfully obvious when somebody is doing this; suddenly a slew of brand new posters jump out of the woodwork and into a conversation as if they'd been posting here for months. Which, of course, they have been, just under various transparent identities.
