Anyone else experience this with a first and second?

I was finishing up a closing today, when Mrs. Borrower's cell phone rings. She ignored the first call, but when she realized from the area code it might be lender, she answers it and gives the phone to hubby. She looks at me, and says "that was a notary who said she was supposed to do a closing and she was calling for directions. Isn't this the closing? " I politely answer yes, to the best of my knowledge. Mrs. Borrower's next question was "Do you mean we are going to have to sign all these papers all over?". By this time hubby was off the phone, and said "remember, Mrs., we have a second. That was the notary for the second mortgage. [looking at me] I don't know why they have two different notaries doing this". Before I left there were two more phone calls giving directions on how to get to borrowers.

What struck me and the borrowers was that notary #2, at least from the area code of her cell phone, was from two counties over (more than 40 miles away). And the street where she told Mr. Borrower she was stopped when she first called was over 3 miles away heading out of town. There was no way it could have been included in the directions from her county to borrowers house. And M/M Borrower don't live in a big town; maybe 5-7 minutes tops from one end to another, including the one traffic at the four corners main intersection in "downtown".

I'm not judging but isn't this out of the ordinary? To have two different notaries with appointments back-to-back? For those who have more expertise and experience than I do, other than $$$$, what would be the advantage or why would something like this be scheduled?

I've never heard about something like this before, but it doesn't surprise me. All I can think of is that the borrowers are getting a second from a different lender??? I have had another notary show up to an appointment that I was supposed to do though. She had an original appt. that had been cancelled, and took it upon herself to reschedule with the same docs whent the lender sent me new docs. I didn't want to cause a scene so since I was the second one to arrive, I politiely left. I got the call that afternoon to go back and do it, so she actually got me paid extra $$ for the trip fee and the closing!

Yes, something happend to the computer system and the lender thought they were going to be down for a while, so they sent me out with the first. The second notary followed a couple of hours later as the lender got the system up sooner than expected. But is wasn't a surprise. Everyone knew what was going on.
