Different Types of Document Viewers

I've been trying to research this, but I'm relatively new so forgive me if my question is in the realm of the patently obvious.

What I'm trying to learn is how many different types of document viewers there are as well as how they apply to the different file extensions, such as *.pdf or *.prn, that are utilized for loan packages; e.g., Adobe Reader is the viewer for *.pdf files.

Both my printers utilize PCL6 drivers, and I would like to be able to have a sufficient array of viewers on my computer so that I'm prepared to handle any kind of document I may receive. However, I don't want so many viewers on my system that their purpose is duplicative.

I've read a number of references to SwiftView, and I saw BrendaTX's messages (44429 & 13516, etc.) regarding the PCL Index Utilities. I also saw PAW's page of downloadable viewers which looked excellent at http://pawnotary.com/download/. But, I'm just not exactly sure how this all ties together.

So, is there a comprehensive list somewhere which addresses the following:

which document viewers are regarded as essential?

which file extensions do they open?

and how does the PCL Index Utilities help to ready one's computer system?

Any comments or explanations would be greatly appreciated!

Give this notary a cold beer, or a Diet Coke.

You are studying hard, friend.

Don't sweat the small stuff. Bookmark Paul's website. 75% of my edocs come via PDF or Swiftview. I have not run into a situation where I was not given a link, or sent the viewer.

God, I could use a cold beer after all the hot weather we've had in Illinois recently!!

I did bookmark Paul's site, but thanks for the suggestion that I'll be fairly well-prepared if I just download SwiftView for the time being.

FAN - you could download them all and store them on your desktop. You'd be a little bit ahead of the game. You've impressed the heck out of me with your concern for being prepared.

Okay - I am paying attention now...each different viewer will support a different file type, aka, different lender's docs, if they do not use PDF or Swiftview.

Who uses what is not something I keep stored in my brain. I just double click and it opens if I have the utility stored on my computer.

Just the other day, I had to go to a web site where first I had to download a viewer which would then enable me to directly print the document that was to be presented to the borrower. It was the lender's way of not allowing the actual file to be downloaded onto a signing agent's computer, but just printed. There was an 800 number for tech support, and a really nice guy prepared to walk you through the whole process.

But in reading some of the comments here regarding e-docs, etc., it's clear to me that if you run into a snag in the downloading/printing process, you might lose the job precipitously.

And I was just trying to get my act together, so that didn't happen to me.

Let me guess, it was VMP (aka Elynx) that you have to print directly. I do have the viewer on my website where you can save the file to your computer. As Brenda said, you're ahead of the game having all those utilities download/installed. You're preparing yourself well for the job.

No, actually. It was called DT Viewer and it was utilized by Wolters Kluwer Financial Services Secure Document Exchange.

Re: Wow!! Thank you!

I just got off the phone with Bonnie since she's right here in my own back yard, and I just finished downloading SwiftView. Now I'm working on the other viewers. . . .

Re: Wow!! Thank you!

Keep in mind that lenders use their own *proprietary* software. Just had a WMC closing tonight where I had to download their viewer. You will ALMOST always get a link with the viewer or to ensure you have the most up-to-date viewer installed if required for printing.

Re: Actually I am a premier member

and I've mentioned to the folks that run this site that I think there is something wrong with the way my account is configured but they don't seem to agree with me.

So thanks for mentioning about the orange square. Perhaps you are proving my point!
