Heat -- borrowers with no A/C with windows shut tight and no
fans....
What is the deal with borrowers who have no A/C, but have all their windows shut tight with the drapes and shades wide open, making their house a green house? -- and not a fan to be seen? I went to a woman's house the other night and she was drenched in sweat, apologizing because she didn't have A/C -- but yet she had every damn window CLOSED! Sweet Jesus, what is wrong with people?
It was hotter in her house than outside. I told her that we needed to open a couple of windows, she opens one. And for heavens sake, how about a fan, they sell them real cheap at Target ($10.00). I think I know what the Wicked Witch of the West felt like after Dorothy threw the bucket of water on her -- I melted in that chair, and as a extra treat, it stuck to my behind when I attempted to leave, causing my skirt to be pulled down. Isn't that lovely?
Another couple lived in a beautiful, very upscale neighborhood. They were sitting on the beautiful porch when I arrived. We go inside, through a screen door, and they shut the inner storm door behind us. They do not have A/C, but they do have a Great Dane and two Terriers. The house reeked of urine and there were questionable dark clumps on the carpet everywhere.
There are no windows open. The house was also extremely dirty. I would think that since they make more than $15K a month that they could afford some sort of maid service, since it seems they are too lazy to clean themselves. But beyond that, how about opening a window and pugging in a fan?
I used to have a portable fan that fit in my briefcase, and ran on a D battery. It broke at the end of last summer and I never replaced it -- silly me.
Well, after sweating my behind off, I ordered two different types of personal cooling fans and they finally showed up yesterday -- thank God!
Today should be a much better day with my personal cooling fans!

Hi Tina,
I agree I've been in situations like that myself. I never said a word and neither did they!
Actually I didn't have the air on a lot in my condo the last few days and had the doors and windows shut because my home seems to stay cool on its own. I only need to turn on the air when the inside temp gets above 80, which is when it starts to get "still" in here. But most people's homes are not like that and they should of course turn on the air if they are expecting someone. Although I am perfectly comfortable in my own home with the air off until it gets to 80, I always turn the air on if I am expecting company. Especially this past week which has been a steamy one all over the country.
I'd love to hear about the reactions from your borrowers when you turn on your personal cooling fans. You should get one of those little plastic ones that also spray a water mist on you....LOL.

LOL. I actually purchased one of those from Sharper Image. My other fan is their OxygenFresh Personal Fan that hangs around the neck.
The one that hangs around the neck will be nice for when it's not too, too hot. I've been wearing it in my office, where the temp is around 80 and it works pretty good.
The water misting one will be for when it's oppressive. ;-)
Last summer, whenever I would pull out my little fan, borrowers would make fun of me and would want to know what else I had in my briefcase. They would make comments about me being related to Marry Poppins. But, while they were making fun, I had a nice cool breeze blowing on my upper body, while they would be dripping in sweat.

The borrower tried to steal my Sharper Image misting fan! They thought it was great and when I was packing up to leave, they took it and were holding it off to the side -- I'm assuming so that I couldn't see it and would forget it.
I held my hand out, told them that the fans are on sale on the Sharper Image website, and then told them if they wanted to keep something they could keep the pens.
The borrowers were giving me a hard time from the get-go, calling me Mary Poppins because I kept pulling things out of my briefcase.

Re: Tina it is always interesting to see how others live....
I live in a mountain community and quite frankly almost no houses have air including mine, it seldom gets hot here and if it does by chance, it cools by 6 p.m. Some folks just may not like AC, then you have those with allergies, others may not want to spend the loot on an AC bill.....some may not want dust to come in through the windows perhaps neurotic about cleaning.....I say open every damn window I love the fresh air coming in, I pay no mind to the dust. I prefer no air on due to allergies.......

Tina, We ran into that same situation last week. EOM of all times. My husband, and main loan signing agent, was doing the signing. Long story short he ended up in the hospital with heat stroke! He was one very sick man!!! It took him out of commission, literally, for 5 days. Thank goodness my mother also works with us. But it meant that the two of us did the work for three. I'm still playing catch up with my desk and sleep.
I've told them both more than once, and I'm sure I will tell them again, IF CONDITIONS are not good (ie: heating / cooling, animals, health issues, etc) there are other alternatives. We cater to the borrower BUT not at risk of our own health. It can be a fine line and sometimes hard to draw.

If this condition is unbearable, smell, heat, etc. is it incorrect to ask them to go to a local neighborhood restaurant where there is a/c? I'm new at this and don't want to start off on the wrong foot.

Toni - Grin and bear it when at all possible.
I sat through 90 degrees at 2:30 pm this afternoon for a rev mort. Beautiful home, nice, nice couple.
While I might vent and rave about mistreatment of signing agents, I am a dutiful one.
If at all possible, unless your health is truly in danger, grin, sweat and deal with it.
