Mia-Michigan hope this helps--no background check in MI
Dear Julie, I have checked with the Secretary of State to be sure after reading the Notary Act, and the act gives the ability for the SOS to do a background check if they feel one is necessary. So in answer to your question, they can but do not do it for every application. Hope this helps. Patty Hertrich Rep. Taub's Office

Hello,
I am emailing you since I believe you were instrumental in initiating the notary public act, even though I am not in your district.
I get different answers from the Office of the Great Seal, so I figured you would definately know the answer to my question:
Does the Office of the Great Seal actually do a background check BEFORE appointing someone as a notary public. I know the verbage says "may" but a few of us notaries public are debating if the state really does check. Some companies that utilize our services want us to have a background check and use their provider, but if the state of Michigan does it as part of the notary public application process, I can alert my companies about Michigan's policy.
Thank you for your speedy response--I know the election is next week, but I really need this answered as soon as possible.

"So in answer to your question, they can but do not do it for every application." <--- Now that's clear as mud.
How will we know if they HAVE run a Background Check?
Oh, I just love how our State Legislatures make Laws. "
I guess we are back to square one again. Thanks Julie.
