OT - My computer is making sounds and I'm afraid the hard
drive is going to crash. Do any of you know an easy way to download all my files and e-mail other than onto disks and floppies? It would take days to do that with all I have on my computer. TIA!

I once saw a sign in a computer repair shop. Can't remember the exact numbers but this is close enough:
Repair rates: $40 per hour $85 per hour if you have already tried to fix it yourself

Purchase Windows Live One Care and go pick up a
USB hard drive.
LOC will back up all your files onto the USB Hard Drive. Problem solved.

Andy, thanks for that...
I know this way will work if the computer is still chugging along...It may take awhile to copy all the files but it will work.
( Makes me feel happy when my way and Andy's way are the same! He's "certified"...I just "certifiable". )

There is a "backup" in system tools that will do the same thing.

Sylvia...there sure is, but I like the ease of WLOC and
the other tools it has to keep my computer on an even keel.
WLOC copies every file to the disk in the folder it was already in on the system. I don't remember the system tools making it that easy for me.

or you can go and buy an external hard drive from best buy for around 100:00 or so and then you may down load all of your files. this way if your hard drive on your computor dose crash you won't lose any of your files. this is the best advice that I could give you.

Re: OT - My computer is making sounds and I'm afraid the har
Usualy, a hard drive just won't start. Sometimes a harddrive makes a noise like a dry bearing, but usually not. It also depends on the kind of noise the compouter is making. There could be two or more cooling fans in there that are much more prone to noise than the hard drive. I looked at a relative's computer that was making noise and it was dust in the power supply cooling fan. It could also be dust in the cpu cooling fan, especially if you have a tower that you keep on the floor. I would hate to get help from a computer repair store unless I personally know the people. The computer repair industry is one of the most corrupt repair industries that there is.
What I do is constantly back my main computer up to a remote usb hard drive and also use an online back up company in case someone breaks in and steals everything.

That is what I use, but there are several good ones out there. It is also pretty slick when you buy a new computer. Real easy to move your files from one to the other.

If you do decide to try Carbonite, there is a 15 day free trial. However if you go through Kim Komando's website it is a 3 day free trial.
I am going to get it

Hi! Karen!
I am sorry that you were experiencing technical problems logging in to your computer. I have included instructions below for basic maintenance which often resolves the type of problem you describe.
First I must ask: were you using Internet Explorer Windows
Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Internet Options. Click on delete Files in the middle of the window and click OK to confirm deletion. Click Delete Cookies and select OK to confirm deletion. Click the Settings button and place the do next to Every Visit to Pae. Were it says "amount of disk space to use," set it to the far left and click OK. Click on the Privacy tab on top and then select Default. Click OK to exit out ot the dialog box and open a new Internet Explorer window.
Also, you should try to use the System Restore so that it even helped me eliminate a VIRUS that infected computer . . . I eliminate virus by simply using the SYSTEM RESTORE to go back in time 7 days BEFORE a possible infection. So don't be afraid to try it.
To use System Restore: - Left click on START > Then All Programs,
- Highlight ACCESSORIES >Then SYSTEM TOOLS,
- Then HIGHLIGHT system restore . . . Click RESTORE MY COMPUTER TO AN EARLIER TIME < < < and pick a time and date in the past when things were working OK (usually a day or two BEFORE the trouble began). This should restore your computer and any possible misplaced TOOL BARS.
- The box should be empty.. so you can use the System Restore program. If that box has the check mark, System Restore is shut down. NEVER put check mark in that box
-Then restart your computer!
Good luck!
