RM for $55.00 and a 75 mile roundtrip.

I love old folks, I hope to be one some day, but 3.5 hours to close for $55.00 is asking a bit much. You'd think with the fees that come with these loans that there would be more than a pittance for the folks who 3 out of 4 times are the only humans the borrowers will meet and whose work everything depends on.

and I wish other Notaries would quit accepting these assignments.. *sigh*
Its worse for us in Alaska. I get calls alot, from agencies who think I would
be happy to take a Mortgage Refi with edocs for $40... The Alaska economy
is very different than the economy in many states.. our average wages are
higher - cost of living - I would make more working at Walmart than many of
the deals I get offered..

My car gets 38mpg and costs 76c per mile to own and operate.

75 miles x 76c = $57. That silly RM job would have cost me money.

Some people have told me I should adjust my per mile figure by applying the IRS mileage allowance rate (50.5c/mile) to get a per mile cost of 26.5c/mile. But, as PAW has pointed out, taxes don't work that way. I don't get to figure out my total income tax bill and then take off [50.5c x my total number of business miles]. All I get to do is lower my total tax bill a little bit by including my mileage deduction on my Schedule C.
