Hi. Anyone over the age of 16 who is not a party to the document can be a witness. Since LA is a community property state, spouses cannot witness. I like to stay away from witnesses with the same last name as mine, but sometimes that is unavoidable especially when my spouse and daughter are the only witnesses I can get at the last minute.
Btw, I am located in Northern Louisiana.
