I accepted my first order from a reputable signing co. (that I have done numerous closing for) to facilitate an oral swab genetic cancer screening for an elderly lady. My instructions stated the client was not to be contacted until the day of the appt. as someone from the lab would be in touch the day before to remind them and go over instructions. When I called the morning before the appt. the lady's granddaughter seemed very wary and didn't know anything about it and asked if her Dr. ordered the test. I told her I didn't know and gave her the name of the lab and asked her to have her grandmother call me. The consent form she was supposed to sign implied that the doctor was ordering the test.
A short while later I get a call from the elderly lady's doctor asking me who I was and who ordered this test (she didn't) and basically accusing me of running a scam. At this point I was annoyed to say the least at being made to look like an idiot. So now I'm not sure what to think. I have never heard of a scam involving oral swab tests and I'm wondering if the lady signed up for something and then forgot.
It was still too early to call the signing co. or the lab (both on west coast) so I did some internet research and found out that there are Medicare scams out there involving exactly the scenario I described and warning the elderly not to agree to any lab tests that their doctor didn't order.
I let the hiring party know what happened and cautioned them about what I found out. Needless to say I won't be agreeing to any more of this type of work. Even if it isn't a scam I would rather not take a chance. |
