The security risks of uploading to a web site are different than the risks of faxing.
Some risks of uploading: the web site doesn't use TLS (the modern successor to SSL) which encrypts messages in transit. Or, the site is spoofed so you upload to the wrong site. Or, the setup of the TLS is corrupted, so it appears you're using TLS but you really aren't.
Some risks of faxing: Your line has been tapped; maybe by a private-sector crook, or maybe by the government (further discussion of the government belongs in Just Politics). Or you could fax it to the wrong number; the recipient would probably just discard it, but you never know. FAX-to-email services have already been mentioned.
In my opinion the safest method is for the sender and recipient to agree on a strong password and password-protect the document before it is emailed or uploaded. Ideally the shared password would be agreed upon in person. |
