When you suddenly realize the company you are seeking payment from has disappeared from the radar screen, no answers to emails, telephone messages, texts...it's likely they can't meet their own obligations to taxing agencies, not just the IRS, and the title/escrow companies are pretty fed up over getting calls re. non payment. They just can't stay in business. To boot, the reason they can't pay in 30 days and stretch payment out beyond 60 and 70 days is because they've already spent your fee, which they are paid in 3-5 days.
If you're not getting 1099s from companies you have clearly performed more than $600 in a tax year, it's a clear sign the company is not organized and is not issuing these reporting forms to State and Federal agencies.
Just take a look at all the companies that have disappeared from SC over the years. It's only the good ones, the 4 an 5 star companies that are hanging in there.
I cherish my vendors who've been around for a long time and have the integrity to navigate a ship in the best direction for all.
My criteria for a company to be legitimate in my book gets more and more defined the longer I do this work.
