I am a Tennessee notary and have been asked to notarize parental consent letters for a minor's travel abroad.
Do I have any responsibility to verify the parent / guardian relationship? i.e. ask for letters of guardianship or birth certificate
Talking to 4 other local notaries I have received 4 different answers.
It seems it would be prudent to verify the person granting the permission is authorized to give it, but that seems a bit outside the realm of verifying the signer's identity and willingness to sign.
