EXACTLY! It may not be an effective strategy to gain more work, but I've always done this as a part-time gig, not my primary source of income. Others may not choose to do this, but as things slow down across the industry, I'm a hair's breadth away from leaving the biz. As "standards" increase and income decreases, it's all becoming a big hassle. This strategy works for me because of what you said. --I'm not playing footsies with them for the next 2 hours, until they ultimately find a cheaper shmuck. In this case (today), they responded "No thanks." :~D Their original offer was !75 dollars! (again, for over an hour away), so I effectively avoided this half-day scenario: Them: $75 Me: $XXX Them, 15 minutes later: $85 Me: $XXX Them, 30 minutes later: $95 Me: $XXX Them, 1 hour later: $100 Me: $XXX Them: No response, because some other shmuck bit. :~D
So--in my case--the ultimatum did what it was supposed to do, by counter-offering with a firm response that ultimately weeded out another slimy Signing Company. |
