that she built in the 60s. The county imposed many new building code requirements, like a 100,000 water tank. She was able to mitigate all their SB county requirements with the help of her son who lent her $75K to do the work. She paid $100K in the 60s for her property and sold it a couple of years ago for $1M. She left SB because she said she couldn't do another fire. she lived in a travel trailer while her house was being built. She now lives near UC Davis where she spends all her spare time at the arboretum. She is also a botanist.
I performed a lot of signings for people in the fire areas of SB for several years. Many people did not rebuild, they left. Banks sold the vacant, cleared lots to hopeful new owners. Landscaping, building and materials requirements are all different, and some people were not allowed to rebuild.
One couple was burned so badly trying to flee their rental property that they can never work again.
Fire ravages communities, families, properties. It takes years to recover, some people never do. |
