You're there to notarize, not analyze. All your notarization does is indicate that you have properly identified the signer and they have either acknowledged signing the document or signed it in front of you after having taken an oath as to the truth of its contents. That's it - the back story is just noise.
If you feel uncomfortable with the situation or if you have reason to believe that the persons appearing before you are not really who they say they are (i,e, you're not sure whether the IDs is valid), you should just decline to notarize. Suggesting that it seems complicated and that they consult an attorney is an easy out. I wouldn't focus on what doesn't sound right. |
