With all the new legislation about digital notarization, a lot of new terms have come along. It seems to me some of those notary glossaries you see around the net should add a few newer terms:
electronic seal: No general definition. It depends on the laws of the individual state.
electronic signature: No general definition. It depends on the laws of the individual state.
logically associate: in a digital context, create a logical connection between a computer file and a notarial certificate so that one can be certain that a computer file is exactly the same as the one intended by the notarial certificate.
notarial officer: A person with the authority to perform notarial acts. Depending on the jurisdiction, it could include notaries public, court reporters, judges, mayors, and many others.
official stamp: For a tangible record, an impression made with a rubber stamp or similar. For an electronic record, the electronic equivalent; the requirements will vary from state to state.
official stamping device: a device that complies with state laws and create official stamps. For tangible records, it would be a rubber stamp or similar device.
record: An instrument or document. Used in the Revised Uniform Law on Notarial Acts.
RON: Remote online notarization. A notarial act carried out by a notarial officer who is communicating with the signer over an audio-video link that meets the requirements of the laws of the relevant state(s); the signer is not in the physical presence of the notary.
tangible record: a record that is directly understandable by humans without the assistance of artificial devices, such as computer. Usually, paper, but could be a refrigerator door with words painted on it.
