Some of those signing services that start nagging notaries 60 days before a commission expires will soon be alerting Vermont notaries (all our commissions expire February 10, 2019). The new law passed in the most recent session of the Vermont General Assembly completely overhauled the notary law.
The first phase of the changeover shifts the application process away from county assistant judges and to the Office of Professional Regulation in the Secretary of State's office. That office has prepared a FAQ for the new application procedures:

A few hints:
You won't be able to apply until mid-December.
Quite a few people, like judges, who used to be able to notarize by virtue of the office they held, will now have to apply for notary commissions. Many people who are government employees or hold elective office will be exempt from the $15 fee.
Eventually there will be exams for new notaries and continuing education for renewing notaries, but that's a few years away.
Try to make your current notary seal(s) last until July 1, 2019, because new requirements will go into effect. The new rules for seals aren't written yet. |
