Intel's announcement at the White House today that they would be investing $7 Billion in a new chip fabrication facility in Chandler, AZ that would add 3000 jobs had some business reporters scratching their heads - Intel originally announced the same facility in 2012 with President Obama, but the project was abandoned two years later. In addition, Intel recently announced plans to layoff about 12000 employees, so this would not be a net gain in jobs.
This follows the recurring deja vu pattern of corporations trying to curry favor with the Trump administration by re-announcing plans they originally announced a year or more ago and then allowing Trump to take credit for the alleged job growth.
Whether any of these companies will actually follow through with their plans and whether the jobs will materialize remains to be seen. Trump himself, when he was getting the permits to build his golf course in Scotland, said it would add over 1000 jobs; it added less than 200. |
