This morning, Donald Trump may have accidentally admitted to a crime. He tweeted the following, which may have been just a really poor and unthinking choice of wording:
“I had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI. He has pled guilty to those lies. It is a shame because his actions during the transition were lawful. There was nothing to hide!”
If Trump fired Flynn because he knew he lied to both Pence and the FBI, he has a problem. The day after he fired Flynn, with what he is now saying was the knowledge that he lied to the FBI, he asked FBI Director Comey to "let this go" (per Comey's contemporaneous notes). That could amount to attempted obstruction of justice, and guess what Clinton got impeached for?
Whether anything will come from it remains to be seen, but now someone really should take that phone away from him before he does some serious damage to himself. |
