Trump's DHS, after agreeing to a judge's order to NOT deport immigrants seeking asylum for domestic violence and gang violence while the case was pending, tried to pull a fast one by putting a mother and daughter - plaintiffs in that case - on a deportation flight to El Salvador during the early morning hours today. The judge, when told about this by ACLU lawyers during the court hearing, went ballistic and ordered the government to turn the plane around and return the mother and daughter to the US. He also threatened to hold government officials in contempt of court for defying his order, starting with AG Sessions.,
When is this administration going to learn that there are THREE CO-EQUAL branches of government and that the Executive Branch doesn't get to do whatever it wants to do? The "rule of law" requires that the courts be obeyed. The woman and her daughter were here legally - they applied for asylum, which is not a crime - and their case was being heard in court. DHS attempted to ignore a court order IT HAD ALREADY AGREED TO and deport them anyway.
In other immigration news, Melania Trump's parents became US citizens today. Melania is a naturalized citizen, of course, and she sponsored her parents' citizenship. While they didn't get special treatment, what happened here is called "chain migration" - the process by which naturalized citizens are able to bring immediate family members into the US and which Trump insists has to end. If he feels that strongly about it, why not set an example with his own in-laws? |
