There's nothing to walk back. The population of Randolph County is about 7700; of those roughly 4700 are black. That's the highest proportion in any county in the state. Closing the polling places would have effectively disenfranchised many of them by making it difficult or impossible for them to cast their vote. Every vote counts.
Racism and voter suppression go hand in hand. Yes, it was a dumbass move, but we still don't know why they made the decision to pursue it. Once again, the questions not being answered - why was this suddenly an issue just before an important election? Why have these alleged conditions been allowed to exist for years until now?
