I think you have a point about semantics, Linda, but I agree with Jan. I do think it has a negative implication and I'd rather not leave the window open for those words to even enter the picture. I believe that words have power and I feel that that particular phrase *could* undermine to some extent - however slightly - whatever professional conduct and demeanor a notary has projected. It may not diminish our role overall but it's introducing a negative, so why even put that in their head?
Besides, there are so many other possible ways of communicating the fact that we can't give opinions or interpret. My usual response (after I've told them my legal disclaimer in the beginning) is that it would be inappropriate for me to comment on that. That's what seems to work best for me, as most people respect that.
