I disagree. There are a variety of notarial acts, and Roger's statement is almost true for some, and totally wrong for others. It's almost true for acknowledgments and oaths, we just want to make sure we're not mentioned in the documents. I had to turn down a request for an oath a few weeks ago, because I was at the same emergency that the person taking the oath was, and there was a good chance I would have been mentioned in the document.

It's less true for copy certifications; in that case, we want to make sure the copy is accurate, and it's not a type of document where copies, or copy certifications, are forbidden.

Finally, there's protests. I think everyone in the forum avoids those like the plague, which in itself shows we care about the contents of those documents.
