For signings, it's rare for me to ever go beyond 20 miles anymore, but what you describe has kind of been my de-facto position all along. That works here because of the density of the population I live close to. Your situation is different, so we each have to do what makes sense for us. A lot of it has to do with what the market will bear. I think I heard that gas prices are starting to level off, and might even start dropping a touch, but we'll have to see. That might just be here in So. OC, which has had some of the highest gas prices in the area.
I've also been doing that with GNW for a very long time, with 5-mile increments. I'm pretty much keeping the same zones, but bumped up the fee amount for each. I might modify it as makes sense to the situation, particularly if it's just one or two signatures. I'm not doing the driving unless it's worth it. I find two kinds of reactions. Some don't bat an eye about the fee at all, but it seems those who quibble about the fee will quibble regardless of what it is. Those folks can go to UPS.
