Mary, You are too good for your own good. Polite people have really been set up for this kind of Bully-Abuse.
You were sitting there playing by the rules of respectfulness toward your job and those who hired you. On the other hand you were being treated as if you were nothing.
While you were being the adult, Girlie-Bull was being a two year old.
Finally you say "never again." And you mean it.
I am sure your boss DID think you were being mistreated because you were...and a good boss does not want anyone but them being abusive to you! 
Really, I think I would have left after waiting the first fifteen minutes on the woman to call me back. You had no instructions, so how were you supposed to know? New assignment - new day - new instructions. Yep, you need to move on and away from that one.
