I made the above statement because I am not as sensitive as I need to be. It has been pointed out to me by a close notary friend who is black that my idea of funny and her idea of funny are two different things.
See, I wrote her because a poster brought this to my attention and said it was a racist remark. I was shocked. Had no idea. Do what??? But, if it was so, I wanted to fix it as best I could.
So, I wrote two notaries whose judgment I can trust. One friend's opinion has come in and it is enough to tell me that I should definitely apologize for this and say that I did not mean anything more than something like Jethro Bodine's antics would be during his James Bond phase...or a stupid attempt at a joke about a secret covert operation of the CIA or the FBI. Please understand that was the context.
Let's not debate this because if it hurt one black person to hear this, that's enough. My family is a mixture of black, white, hispanic and yet I personally do not "know" being black. I am sorry.
I am very appreciative to my black friend on this board who was good enough to tell me the truth. Thank you very much, friend. Thank you for knowing that I am not racist and for seeing the joke, yet being good enough to tell me I should, in fact, issue this apology. This counsel has been well-receive and should be a good lesson for every pale face out there. Never again will I make such a joke without adding something about camouflage paints and paramilitary gear (as my friend's husband has suggested.)
