I have run into this scenario before. In my case it turned out that the party that hired me continued to shop it around to find a signing agent with lower fee. I was told the signing was cancelled, but like you when I called to notify the borrower...the borrower told me that they haf been contacted by the other signing agent, and that it was proceeding. In the interim I had turned away other signings that were a conflict in timing.

The next time I was contacted by the ss to schedule a signing I brought this to their attention.
I requested that they remove me from their data base.
