I have always resented a company that didn't pay me until I asked about it and only THEN did they tell me that they needed a W9 from me. In my mind, it means that I would never have gotten paid if I hadn't asked. These companies are looking for any excuse possible not to pay and fall back on the old "Oh, you didn't send us a W9".
