I also received something like that several weeks ago (and a reprise within the past week), so it makes me wonder if an old notary site has somehow been hacked. Thankfully, I had also only used the password they had on a very few sites (less than half a dozen) - and not for a very long time. Some of those sites haven't existed in years.
I don't recall if mine requested bitcoin or not, as I didn't bother to read the whole thing. It was pretty nasty, with threats and accusations, claiming they've watched me visiting porn sites, etc. (Yeah, right! ) After that, I was confident that these were random claims and that they probably only had the password, so I've just deleted them. All they need is to get lucky with a few to make it worth their effort, I suppose. Also, mine had lots of weird characters in the text and lousy grammar, so probably originating from another country somewhere.
I also have long used different passwords for every account - and I cover my webcam, too, just in case!
