We had one in our front pasture several years ago

that was trying to make lunch out of our two dogs - not a pleasant experience - and yes the dogs were fine; it was right after Tropical Storm Debbie when we got a deluge a rain - apparently he came from the state property next to us - got flushed out by all the rain and the rising retention pond; that guy climbed 3 fences to get to them (yes, they can climb fences) - I also hear they can move at up to 35-45mph.

Haven't seen one since and hope we never do again!
