I don't know that it is that they are necessarily "cold". I know when my father in law passed away, although we didn't expect him to pass away the day he did, it was something we had been expecting for a while, and we had accepted the inevitable. Because of the pain he had been in, it was a "relief" that he was no longer suffering, and I think if we were refinancing that day we could have gone through with it.
Maybe as we get older we just accept death a lot easier. It also could have been if they didn't sign the docs then that it may have been a problem for them.
Life goes on as they say.
