"You can avoid sharing the account number by taking the check to the bank in person, endorsing it with just your signature, and depositing or cashing it"
I don't know where you bank or how your banking works in VT, but here in FL (and it was the same in CT) - if I go to my bank to cash a check OR deposit a check my account number has to be on the back of the check - and if I want to cash it I have to have sufficient funds in MY account to cover the check. The only way to avoid any of this is to take the check to THEIR bank and cash it.
Maybe different in VT.
BTW, I have no problem with direct deposit - but I, too, would not pay them a fee to do it. If I have to pay the fee then my signing fee is increased to cover it.
