Jenny, this may be just semantics, but I never *ask* them to take it out of their wallet. I flat out tell them that I'll need for them to take it out of there for me or that I need to see the original. I'm always careful to use a nice tone of voice and smile, but they know I'm serious (and unapologetic) and I've never had a problem with that. Just a couple of times, people have complained about how hard it was to get out of the wallet, but I don't respond - just wait, watch and smile while they make the effort. They get the idea real fast that we will not be proceeding until they do it. Anyone who has ever gotten a traffic ticket knows they need to hand over their ID outside of the holder. Sometimes it's downright fun to watch some of those beligerent types back down - especially the ones who are real full of themselves! ;>
