Depending on which version of Java the site uses and whether or not the site employs Active-X, will determine if the necessary plug-in for Firefox are (1) available and (2) work. With Active-X, you must use Microsoft's Internet Exploder. Also, some sites specifically look to see if you are using Internet Exploder and which version. Then fails to do anything if you're not using what they are checking for.

As Carol noted, there is an extension for Firefox that allows you to easily switch to IE for any page. Also, you can tell Firefox to open a website in IE rather than a with Firefox.
