I use a product called DEMON. You can purchase it at a feedstore. I do not recommend it if you are concerned with chemicals. However, I was born in the "Dow Hospital" in Freeport, Texas and I lived in the shadow of the "Chlor 3" plant for the first 11 years of my life. We lived our lives by the alarms when there was a release. (For a visual, reflect on scenes from the Urban Cowboy.)
Right or wrong, I am more concerned with roaches than I am chemicals. Roaches can cause disease in a big way as well as can chemicals.
DEMON does not have a bad odor and it will remove the need for pest control visits for at least six years that I can attest to. If you can do this before you move into a place, get the product, mix it according to instructions and use a pump garden sprayer. Spray around the house, in cracks, crevices and on carpets. Remove pets and children, of course. Let it dry before resuming life in the area.
For $10 you have completed pest control for a good long while. You can order this product online as well.
Thereafter, the only bug you will see is a dead bug.
I also have done my own termite preventive maintenance using chemicals I have ordered and used according to instructions. It's not pretty, it's not glamourous but it's dang sure cheaper than the $1000 contracts I have been offered.
It's also been effective for me. Follow all safety precautions in handling chemicals.
