You can only do what you can do, and when we look at ID's we are only experts to the point of what we know and believe to be true to the best of our knowledge. If it looked real, and your suspicions were not raised, both parties were at ease, that's all we can do as a notary. They appeared before you, they presented what you believed to be a legitimate ID and went forward on the closing. Was there a secondary ID Involved?
As long as the deception was not on your part, I don't think you will be held liable. That's like us determining the metal capacities of elderly singers to see what their state of mind is. We can ask questions, but it's up to us, but we cannot be held accountable as we are not trained Drs.
This is just of course only my opinion. We do not make enough as an NSA to hire an attorney and have him spend hours on this at your expense. Unfortunately sh*t runs down hill and we are always at the bottom and people always want to blame someone. Dont freak out, stand your ground, you did at the time you belived was correct. 9 years later? is there a statute of limitations as well? Keep us posted as to what hapens. Good luck.
