Many attorneys give a 30-minute consultation free or at a minimal cost. Legal guardianship and conservatorship is not dizzying when you consider you live in a different state than your father-in-law; his declining health and memory; that he’s in a care center without any family or friends to check on him or his care at the center. Unfortunately, care centers/nursing homes are not all equal and care or lack of care and sometimes abuse can be issues. A court-appointed guardian not only makes medical decisions, they are the advocate for the elder person making sure they are being tended to and cared for humanely and appropriately. They visit regularly and provide companionship. They are also local, so in emergency situations when time is of the essence, they are easier to contact than an out-of-state relative. |
