the two links in OP are from 2008. Apparently new, improved science says the radiation/radon from granite is minimal. from EPA: "Radon originating in the soil beneath homes is a more common problem and a far larger public health risk than radon from granite building materials."
I did a google search for radon from granite and found many more recent sources. Just the EPA website has hundreds of articles. (would be nice if they were purge the old, outdate stuff!) If I were currently building, I might spend a bit more time on researching as there is certainly lots to learn and consider. Quartz, my current fav, isn't an innocent either!
