We heard from family in Cape Coral, and they are thankfully uninjured. But, very shaken. There’s a lot of damage in their neighborhood. They’re using a generator for their refrigerator and lights. Like most of Cape Carol, they’re on a canal, and the canal-facing portion of their home and yard was pretty damaged. Luckily, the home in the back portion was not badly damaged and is suitable enough to reside there at this time – amazingly.
We couldn’t believe they didn’t evacuate, once Ian’s path veered south. I understand that, as a contractor who did 9/11 rescue and recovery at ground zero in Twin Towers, they felt they could be prepared enough to help the community, but sometimes the best planning is to plan to leave. They said never again.
