I volunteer with the Red Cross and see people after home fires. It's not unusual to see people with homes that are paid off and the insurance was dropped. Usually the people don't explain why they dropped the insurance. Often it seems they inherited the paid-off property, but the younger generation doesn't have a good job and skimps wherever they can, including the insurance.
