I guess it makes sense to them to fly fewer routes, and with full planes - and to use their own planes vs. paying for other carriers to handle their cargo. Distance becomes irrelevant, since they can get the whole country's packages sorted overnight and re-loaded, in bulk, back out to various regional hubs (presumably with full planes again) where they get resorted (perhaps more than once) onto trucks, etc.
When you think about it, it's actually pretty impressive. I suspect all major carriers, including the USPS, use a similar process. |
