with my fellow notaries in northern California. I had the nicest customer come in for a notarization this morning. I looked through the form to ensure that it was complete, filled out my journal and completed the notary certificate. Easy peasy.
He told me that I was the third notary he contacted after the first two refused to notarize his signature on a VS-20 form. This is a form to request a copy of a birth certificate. Their reason for refusing? Because it is in conjunction with a gender change.
News Flash -- in the state of California it is illegal for you to refuse to notarize a signature on moral grounds!!!!!!!! You did not stop him from getting this handled. And yes, he has sent in a complaint with the SOS and has spoken with someone from that office. If they haven't contacted you yet, they will.
Our job is to notarize signatures, not be the morality police.
